Margaret A. Harrell Recognized by Marquis Who’s Who for Excellence in Writing & Photography

Passionate for literature, talented in writing and skilled in photography, Ms. Harrell has been making the world a lot more creative and artistic since beginning her career in 1965

(MediaQuire) RALEIGH, NC (Marquis Who’s Who) /  Margaret A. Harrell has been included in Marquis Who’s Who in the World, in America, in American Art, and in American Women. As in all Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Passionate for literature, talented in writing and skilled in photography, Ms. Harrell has been making the world a lot more creative and artistic since beginning her career in 1965. Along the way, she has been the onsite moderator for a Ford Foundation-funded course in Greek classics in four African American high schools and universities in Mississippi and Louisiana, taught, using Telstar 2 and other long-range technology, by well-known Columbia University classics professor, Moses Hadas, in 1963, at the height of resistance to desegregation; an instructor of dance; an assistant to UVA dream expert and parapsychologist, Dr. Robert Van de Castle; a guest lecturer at the Lucian Blaga University (Sibiu, Romania); a private meditation and energywork teacher for LuminEssence (light body studies founded by Sanaya Roman and Duane Packer), including an instructor for Light Body Consciousness. She has also served as an Assistant Editor at United Feature Syndicate (home to Snoopy and Superman comics), a copy editor/assistant editor for Random House, where she worked on books of famous or to-be famous people, such as NBC anchor Chet Huntley (“The Huntley-Brinkley Report”), and best sellers including Hell’s Angels by Gonzo journalist, Hunter S. Thompson. Living in Belgium she organized United States and Indian workshops and was for five years the international editing coordinator of the Het Toreke Museum exhibit on the Life and Works of Flemish poet Jan Mensaert. And she is a cofounder of the Kayumari spiritual community in California.

Ms. Harrell’s notable displays of her experimental, film cloud photography include the solo exhibit “The Sun in Profile: So Bright It’s Dark,” at a Faulkner Fulbright Conference in Sibiu, Romania, where she also presented a paper on William Faulkner, and group exhibits in Italy and Canada.  A selection is stored at the Het Toreke Museum. Besides her interest in the faces and energy present in her cloud photos, Ms. Harrell uses clouds as a meditative tool. She writes, “Since I experimented with sunlight, the images are in essence light, pieces of sunlight, prana or photons that were fascinating to play with.” In recognition of professional excellence she was included in 11 consecutive editions of Who’s Who in American Art and 23 consecutive editions of Who’s Who in the World. She is also an honorary member of the Transylvania Romania historical society for the study and preservation of the sacred Sinca Veche cave. Additionally, she is a fellow of MacDowell Colony for artists and spent time there on three occasions. When queried about her success, Ms. Harrell attributed her achievements to, first, realizing she was a writer at age seven and, second, being lucky enough to have life-transforming experiences at the C. G. Jung Institute Zurich and afterwards that led her into a deeper and deeper grasp of her authenticity and how that discovery of our core uniqueness, as well as oneness, applies to everyone. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in history (honors and distinction, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) from Duke University and a Master of Arts in contemporary British and American literature from Columbia University. She also completed coursework at the C. G. Jung Institute Zurich (three years), the Institute of Human Development (Brussels) and in various advanced meditation and consciousness studies in Belgium, Ibiza, and the U.S.

Among Ms. Harrell’s published books are, most recently, a four-volume memoir, Keep This Quiet!: My Relationship with Hunter S. Thompson, Milton Klonsky, and Jan Mensaert; Keep THIS Quiet Too: More Adventures with Hunter S. Thompson  Milton Klonsky, Jan Mensaert; Keep This Quiet! III: Initiations, and Keep This Quiet! IV: More Initiations. The third was launched at the 2014 Gonzo Fest in Louisville, KY. Hunter’s first book, Hell’s Angels, is just about to celebrate its 50th anniversary, and Keep This Quiet! volumes I and II reprint the only copy of many of his letters to her professionally and as a friend. Keep This Quiet! was called “a feast for the Gonzo Soul!” Another reviewer, Douglas Brinkley, editor of The Proud Highway and Fear and Loathing in America, wrote, “Keep This Quiet!offers an illuminating look at Hunter S. Thompson in full throttle trying to make it as a Top Notch prose-stylist. Harrell fills in many important biographical gaps. . . . Read it.”

On a different note, in the fourth memoir, More Initiations, many spiritual traditions join hands; not only mysticism and quantum mechanics come into play but also Ms. Harrell’s experience and experiments with parapsychology in the 1990s. In particular in this book there are illustrations of “computer PK,” or psychokinesis, in which by some independent process the computer printouts were sometimes variations of what was on the screen—a novelty Ms. Harrell embraced for its clues about consciousness and its potential as art.

Earlier, she authored the Love in Transition and the Space Encounters series, and a literary criticism book on Faulkner. A contributor of articles to Rhea A. White’s Exceptional Human Experience professional journal, in 1995 she was featured on the Parapsychology Association Convention panel to celebrate the centennial of the birth of world-famous laboratory parapsychologist J. B. Rhine, whom she knew. Also, by invitation, she participated in an international poetry festival in Belgium and Romania in 1992—which led to presenting a play in the international theater festival in Sibiu to launch her first book, a book that had been thirty years in the making. Throughout her career, she has been a very active, lifelong book editor. Drawing on her experience as a dual national, who has lived in Morocco, Zurich, and Belgium as well as the U.S., and had the privilege of studying, living, and teaching about personal transformation for decades, Ms. Harrell intends to continue working in the fields of consciousness, mystical states, the arts and entertainment in the years to come.
